The puzzle of quantum physics: Is the moon still there when no one is looking?

In the first Leibniz Winter Lecture, Markus Aspelmeyer provides an entertaining insight into the seemingly crazy world of quantum phenomena and experiments that turn our understanding of reality upside down.

Even 100 years after it was first described, the mysterious world of quantum physics continues to amaze us every day – and not just scientists. Particles appear to behave like waves, are supposedly in two places at once, and can be ‘spookily’ connected over long distances. So what is the true nature of reality? Is it possible to talk about a quantum object without contradictions? Even Einstein and Schrödinger argued heatedly about the paradoxical consequences of quantum physics for our world view.

When? Saturday, 29 November 2025, at 4 p.m.

Where? Atrium of the main building of Leibniz University Hannover (Welfengarten 1, 30167 Hannover)

The event is open to the public and admission is free. The lecture will be held in German. Registration is requested.

About Prof. Dr. Markus Aspelmeyer
Prof. Dr. Markus Aspelmeyer is a professor of physics at the University of Vienna and scientific director of the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. He was born in Upper Bavaria and studied physics and philosophy in Munich. After completing his doctorate in solid-state physics, he switched to the field of quantum optics and conducted research with, among others, Anton Zeilinger, who later won the Nobel Prize. His current research focuses on the fascinating mysteries surrounding quantum physics and gravity. The internationally acclaimed physicist regularly brings the fascinating world of quantum physics closer to interested audiences through popular science lectures, lectures at the Vienna Children's University and YouTube videos.

About the Leibniz Winter Lecture
