QuantumFrontiers Newsletter #12 (Jul 2022)
Silke Ospelkaus-Schwarzer is new spokesperson of QuantumFrontiers Change of leadership at QuantumFrontiers: On 1 July 2022, Professor Silke Ospelkaus-Schwarzer took over the role of spokesperson at the Cluster of Excellence from Professor Karsten Danzmann. Together with the co-spokespersons Professor Piet Schmidt and Professor Andreas Waag, Ospelkaus-Schwarzer now takes over the management for the second half of the cluster's term until 2025.
4.7 million euros funding for the QVLS High-Tech Incubator Funding from the state of Lower Saxony is a unique opportunity to bring the region's scientific excellence to the market. With the so-called high-tech incubator, the foundation of start-ups that rely on quantum technologies will be supported substantially.
Leibniz University Hannover and TU Braunschweig are launching two linked Master's degree programmes in Quantum Engineering. Two Master's programmes, one goal: the perfect combination of quantum knowledge and engineering ingenuity. Quantum Engineering at Leibniz University Hannover is starting in the winter semester 2022/23, Quantum Technologies in Electrical and Computer Engineering at TU Braunschweig follows in the winter semester 2023/24
Breaking GaN: Precise instruments for the next generation of LED chips The path to new LED technologies is taken layer by layer and flooded with acid. Highly specialized cleanroom equipment is therefore needed to produce for example blue LEDs from gallium nitride (GaN) at the Institute of Semiconductor Technology at TU Braunschweig. Two new large-scale instruments now open up further avenues for semiconductor technology, from which QuantumFrontiers and the Quantum Valley Lower Saxony (QVLS) benefit in particular. Several years of work are behind this. After all, each of the devices has its own peculiarities that only an electron microscope can uncover.

QuantumFrontiers at the IdeenExpo 2022 The Cluster was well represented at the IdeenExpo 2022 alongside the CRC TerraQ thanks to the commitment and support of QuantumFrontiers and TerraQ members. At the booth visitors could learn how to measure mass changes, for example, due recession or accumulation of water via the interactive models of an atomic clock, a gravimeter, an interferometer and two satellites.
Free the cat with quantum gates - a playful entry into the quantum world with virtual reality In the QuantumVR project, researchers of TU Braunschweig have developed an escape game in which quantum gates can literally be touched thanks to virtual reality.
Promoting young talent on Girls' Day The annual Girls' Day campaign aims to increase female pupils' enthusiasm for scientific subjects. The Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers has also been committed to promoting young talent since its launch and has therefore opened some laboratories again this year. At the Einstein Elevator of Leibniz Universität Hannover and at LENA (Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology) of TU Braunschweig, a total of 20 girls (and three boys) aged 11 to 17 gained insights into the work at modern physics research institutes on 28 April.
Research Highlights
Laser cooling meets nanostructures To ready laboratory setups for field research or commercial applications, they need to become smaller and more robust. The new generation of magnetometers, optical atomic clocks, and quantum computers need, above all, compact solutions to generate the right laser beams. The laser beams trap, cool, and observe the individual atoms that are at the center of these instruments. Through QuantumFrontiers, four researchers from different institutions have jointly found a way to develop a compact laser cooling system for particularly challenging atoms. They published their work in the journal Physical Review Applied.
Do you have a research highlight you'd like to add to the QF Website and announce in the Newsletter? Please contact office@quantumfrontiers.uni-hannover.de.
Awards
Two ERC Grants for QuantumFrontiers members Boris Chichkov was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant, Fei Ding an ERC Consolidator Grant. The two scientists will receive a combined total of more than 5 million euros for their research on the development of vascularised tissue and synchronisation in quantum networks.
Wolfgang Ertmer receives Lower Saxony Cross of Merit 1st class Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ertmer is one of the initiators of QuantumFrontiers. For his outstanding work in atomic and molecular physics, laser physics and quantum optics, he has now been awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class (Niedersächsisches Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse) by Lower Saxony's Minister of Science Björn Thümler.
