QuantumFrontiers Newsletter #18 (Jun 2024)
QF Days 2024 with over 270 researchers the annual conference of the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers, brought together over 270 scientists in Hanover on 27 and 28 May 2024. With (guest) lectures, poster sessions and networking events, the QF Days provided a wide range of opportunities for members of the Cluster of Excellence to discuss research at the limits of what can be measured and to develop new ideas together.

Opening of the QVLS HighTech Incubator On 10 April 2024, Lower Saxony's new location for technology transfer in quantum technologies was opened in the former Rolleiwerke Braunschweig: The HighTech Incubator of Quantum Valley Lower Saxony (QVLS-HTI).
2-6 player quantum computer Under the leadership of the TU Braunschweig, the “QUANTista” project team is developing a board game on quantum technologies. With no prior knowledge required, the game aims to illustrate what happens in research laboratories in a fun way.
DFG funds SFB DQ-mat for a further four years Since the consortium was launched in 2016, it has developed into one of the leading global players in this field. The German Research Foundation (DFG) has now approved an extension for a further four years and is funding the Collaborative Research Centre with around 10 million euros.
The „Highlights der Physik“ are coming to Hannover In the week from 23 to 28 September 2024, the science festival "Highlights der Physik" will be coming to Hanover. On Ernst-August-Platz in front of the main train station, visitors can explore astonishing effects and new developments from atomic physics to astrophysics in a large exhibition.
Girls Day and Zukunftstag 2024: A day in a research lab QuantumFrontiers has been involved in this day from the very beginning as part of its work with young talents in order to get pupils interested in the natural sciences and physics in particular. This year, a total of almost 50 pupils at Leibniz Universität Hannover and TU Braunschweig gained a first-hand insight into the world of research.
Braunschweig and Hanover pool microelectronics expertise Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK), the two universities are pooling their research and teaching activities in microelectronics research, including a new degree programme.
Research Highlights
Relativistically accurate - measuring height differences with atomic clocks Optical clocks measure differences in the Earth's gravitational field and thus open up new applications in geodesy
Laser excitation of a nucleus A long-awaited breakthrough opens the door to a new type of atomic clock and the investigation of fundamental questions in physics.
Do you have a research highlight you'd like to add to the QF Website and announce in the Newsletter? Please contact office@quantumfrontiers.uni-hannover.de.
Awards
Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for Daniel Prades and Robert Raußendorf The twelve Humboldt Professorships 2024, Germany's most highly endowed research award, were presented by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Berlin on 13 May. Two of the professorships, Daniel Prades and Robert Raußendorf, will strengthen the QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence at the Universities of Braunschweig and Hanover.
Kekulé scholarship for Tim Seifert The Kekulé Scholarship from the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (FCI) supports highly talented young scientists in chemistry and chemistry-related subjects for two years. In addition to outstanding academic achievements within the standard period of study, the FCI requires the recipient to be working on a doctorate in a scientifically renowned research group.
