The event began with an introduction to microgravity. Through a series of experiments, the pupils discovered that objects in free fall are effectively weightless. This means that it is possible to conduct experiments under weightless conditions even here on Earth. As Dr Christoph Lotz, head of the Einstein Elevator research group, went on to explain, this principle forms the basis of research in drop towers. He described his everyday work as a scientist and provided an overview of current research projects at the Einstein Elevator. The participants were particularly fascinated by research under lunar or Martian gravity conditions. Amongst other things, researchers at the Einstein Elevator are investigating manufacturing processes that may one day make it possible to construct infrastructure on the Moon using lunar regolith.
The highlight of the day was conducting experiments under real microgravity conditions in the Einstein Elevator. The children were allowed to launch small drop capsules containing selected experiments from the QuantumFrontiers MasterClass Microgravity. The experiments inside were recorded, and the results were then viewed and analysed together. The programme concluded with the activity everyone had been especially looking forward to: the launch of the “large capsule”, i.e. the Einstein Elevator itself. The children placed items they had brought along (including toys, a drinks bottle, the class's crocheted mascot bee “Elsa”) inside the Einstein Elevator and followed the flight live from the control room.
The pupils participated in all activities with great enthusiasm, asking many questions and eagerly contributing their knowledge and ideas. For the Einstein Elevator and MasterClasses team, this was the first event involving exclusively such young participants. All those involved were delighted by the success of the event and the children’s keen interest, and so it may well be the start of a new regular format.
Normally, the MasterClass Microgravity invites pupils from Year 11 and above to spend a day at the Hannover Institute of Technology (HITec) and gain insights into microgravity research at QuantumFrontiers. MasterClasses on other topics are also offered during the Lower Saxony Easter, summer, and autumn holidays.
