Explaining Science Training Programmes

Can you explain your research to anyone you talk to?

Whether you're sitting in a job interview, talking to industry partners, or simply explaining your work to someone outside your field: the ability to communicate your science clearly makes all the difference.

Most researchers are never trained for this. This programme changes that! For PhD-Students and postdocs.

The training

The training combines three sessions: an online kick-off covering the theoretical foundations of how to explain well, followed by a self-study phase to deepen your understanding. This is then completed by a full-day in-person workshop in Braunschweig.

What makes it unique: you´ll practice through a variety of hands-on methods, including an AI-supported Virtual Reality environment where you can rehearse how to explain your research in realistic scenarios and receive immediate feedback. Combined with peer feedback and interactive exercises, this helps you build confidence. After the workshop, you can continue practising and further develop your skills beyond the programme.

The commitment

Active participation in the sessions is required. Participation in the workshop is compensated with work units (certificate of participation). This programme is part of an ongoing QF2 research project. To better understand how well the programme works and how it can be improved, participants are asked to provide feedback through short surveys at different points during the programme. Part of the study also includes short, spontaneous video recordings in which you explain your research. These require no preparation and are intended to support your own learning and reflection process.

The benefit & outcome

The programme is designed to be engaging and respectful of your time without compromising on quality. By the end of the programme, you will have a clear answer to the question:
“So, what is your research about?”
Whether in a job interview or other situations, you will be better prepared to explain your work in way that others can understand.
