QuantumFrontiers Newsletter #19 (Oct 2024)
Almost 35,000 People Attended the Highlights der Physik The festival showcased how entertaining and comprehensible science can be. QuantumFrontiers had the scientific leadership and many of our members contributed various exhibits, lectures, and other presentations. We are delighted that we could bring the Highlights der Physik to Hannover and were able to inspire visitors with our science over six eventful days.
Quantum Valley Lower Saxony hosted the Quantum Future Academy 2024 The successful event offered 30 students excursions to leading companies and institutes, lectures by experts in the field of quantum technologies, exclusive insights into the current state of research and development, discussions and networking with entrepreneurs, start-ups and founders, interactive workshops and a cultural evening programme.
New physics within old walls Tanja Mehlstäubler and Piet Schmidt organised a Heraeus seminar to discuss precision experiments to probe for New Physics. With around 70 experts from different fields of physics, they brought together a highly interdisciplinary community including Nobel Prize winner, Eric Cornell.
Laser light to pave the way for the Einstein Telescope Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute; AEI) and Leibniz University Hannover have set up, tested, and commissioned a laser source in a laboratory at the ETpathfinder site in Maastricht. ETpathfinder is a research and development facility for the Einstein Telescope, the future third-generation European gravitational-wave observatory.
Transfer project on quantum sensors reaches final of the INNOspace Masters 2024 The team of QuantumFrontiers members Gabriel Müller, Gina Kleinsteinberg, Christian Struckmann, Jan-Niclas Kirsten-Siemß and Naceur Gaaloul convinced the jury with their submission QuSSat (Quantum Sensor Satellite-based Simulator for Earth Observation and Inertial Navigation).
Anna Christmann, Start-up Commissioner of the Federal Ministry of Economics, visits the QVLS HighTech Incubator QVLS-HTI's modern deep-tech laboratories opened in April 2024 in the historic Rolleiwerke Braunschweig. Two of the eleven start-ups presented their projects for the future of quantum technology to the two visitors from the Ministry: Both MKFS electronics and QUDORA Technologies are developing hardware to fuel the emerging innovation ecosystem in quantum technology.
Virtual ion laboratory and Lego microscope at IdeenExpo 2024 More than 430,000 visitors discovered the IdeenExpo from 8 to 16 June. The new record number of participants was reflected in the well-attended exhibits and full workshops. QuantumFrontiers and QVLS appeared at Ideenexpo 2024 as part of the TU Braunschweig stand.
EU COST Action Networks: QuantumFrontiers with double participation With the European Cooperation in Science & Technology (COST) programme, the European Union supports scientists working on pioneering research topics to establish pan-European networks. With Christian Pfeifer and Dennis Rätzel from the Centre of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM), QuantumFrontiers is involved in two newly approved COST Actions on "Bridging high and low energies in search of quantum gravity" (BridgeQG) and "Relativistic Quantum Information" (RQI).
Professor Oleksandr Dobrovolskiy joined TU Braunschweig Oleksandr Dobrovolskiy heads the Department of Cryogenic Quantum Electronics at the Institute for Electrical Measurement and Fundamental Electrical Engineering. He is interested in superconductivity and magnetism and the quantum devices based on them in sensor and measurement technology, and thus perfectly boosts QuantumFrontiers' quantum electronic research with new facets.
Research Highlights
Quantum tricks for better clocks A team led by Lennart Pelzer from PTB has for the first time experimentally realised a method for accelerating measurements with atomic clocks that was previously only described theoretically.
Quantum leap: Breakthrough for secure communication with “artificial atoms” Researchers from Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, and the University of Stuttgart have implemented a new method for secure communication using semiconductor quantum dots. This advancement could revolutionise how confidential information can be protected from cyber threats.
Two editorial suggestions for new publications on topological systems The topical group “Topological Systems” focuses on investigations of topological concepts in condensed matter systems and the creation, detection and manipulation of topologically protected excitations. Patrik Recher, who is leading the topical group, and his team have recently published two articles in the journal Physical Review B, which were picked as Editors' Suggestions:
