Abstract

Triple clad fibers are, in particular, used in thulium and holmium doped fiber lasers and amplifiers to increase the threshold for critical fiber damage and allow further power scaling. However, important fiber based-components like side-fused signal-pump combiners are not accessible for this fiber type, because the fiber design itself prevents efficient coupling when side-fused. Here, we present a manufacturing process that allows to build this component. It involves the CO2 laser-based ablation of the outer cladding layer of a triple clad fiber to achieve efficient side-fusing. The manufactured signal-pump combiner with a 14/400/480- µm triple clad fiber and two 135/155-µm pump input fibers was measured to have a pump coupling efficiency of 95.5%, a signal-loss of 0.2 dB and a signal-to-pump isolation of 34 dB. We confirm that the majority of the pump power is coupled into the inner cladding of the triple clad fiber by ray tracing simulation. The availability of this component makes the fiber design itself accessible for different laser and amplifier setups and supports their power scaling with high beam quality.
