Since 2018, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research honors outstanding Master- and PhD theses dealing with applied Quantum Technologies with the Quantum Future Award. This year's winners have now been announced in Berlin.

Thomas Gerster from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt took second place in the PhD thesis category. He received the award for his work "Development and validation of single-electron pumps based on quantum dots in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures as candidates for a quantum normal", which he wrote as part of QuantumFrontiers. A technique that is relevant, for example, in connection with the determination of the elementary charge e.

An expert jury selected five finalists from all the applications received for the Quantum Futur Award 2023. These had the opportunity to present their work in short pitches at a public event. Thomas Gerster impressed the jury with his entry and took second place. His prize is a study trip worth €4,000.
